cloudflare is a SPOF
SPOF = single point of failure
at the time of writing this a huge portion of the internet have been down for a couple hours already. all because everyone and their mother decided to rely on cloudflare. cloudflare conditioned everything to fear ddoss attacks and to use them for protection, but then when they go down, all hell breaks lose. the thing is, most websites don't even need cloudflare. even some bigger sites. chances of anyone actually ddossing you are so tiny. no one cares about you, or your tiny shitass blog enough, to actually try to take it down, let's be real. and it is also very unlikely you have enough traffic to justify needing cloudflare either. unless you're using some crap host, you likely have several TERABYTES of bandwidth allowance per month. and hell, even if you exceed it by not much, most hosters will hook you up. unless you use aws (don't).
this demonstrates quite a simple fact: if you put your site behind a centralized service, then this service is a single point of failure. even large established companies make mistakes and can go down. do not centralize your shit. rent your own VPS, or if u can afford a dedi, and be ready to migrate to another server when needed. never ever rely on single provider. or do, if you like guaranteed downtime lol.
as i've said above most people use cloudflare because they have been scared into the idea that you need ddos protection. well, maybe you do, but most likely do not. as they say in cybersec, "no one will burn a zero day on you!". well again, the same is with your website. no one is gonna waste those botnet resources on you. unless, maybe, you pissed someone off. in which case, even cloudflare wouldn't necessarily protect you. if someone wants to fuck you up, they WILL find a way.
especially in those spaces of personal web, many people keep talking about the importance of a decentralized web, and then continue putting their shit behind cloudflare. i guess you enjoy shooting yourself into fucking foot, dont you?
i don't know how else to say it: expose your shit, put your shit out there. face your fears. maybe your shit goes down, maybe it WILL be ddosed, maybe even breached, but at least not down by yet another cloudflare outage lol
