so about a month ago it was so unbearably hot that i couldn’t breathe. i do not own an ac unit, and the fan is barely doing anything... but then there was about a week or so of rainy weather. it was genuinely in between 24 and 27 degrees celsius, to the point i could wear a hoodie comfortably. so while most of europe was still cooking, it had cooled down here. keyword here is “had”, past tense. because its heating up here again, because of course it is.

earlier this day, or more factually yesterday, because normal people don’t consider 4am as an evening of the previous day, i received a message from the government. or more precisely an SMS sent by a police system. the message said that a warning has been issued for a heavy and a long-lasting heatwave. how bad is it gonna be when they used an actual police warning systems to inform people of a heatwave? like, those things are usually only briefly mentioned in the weather section of news, or as those vague warnings in weather apps (such as “yellow warning”, “orange warning”, and similar). and checking those same weather apps, it’s allegedly gonna be between 34-37 degrees for multiple days in a row! and it’s likely going to be high humidity too...

i can’t even grasp how people in africa, india, the middle east, and similar regions even live, isn’t their normal mid 40s? but the thing is, europe isn’t built for this amount of heat. the asphalt radiates the heat back, buildings keep the heat in, and there are not many ways to cool off. you could have a fan blow directly at you, which isn’t very healthy, or you could have an ac, which is not that cheap. but even with a fan, there comes a point where it basically does nothing.

im currently not really affected by the heat, and im mostly fine. which is good honestly. but the fact there has been a full fledged warning, i can’t lie, but say i am a bit worried. even though i don’t even leave the house that much and thus won’t be in the direct heat...

i feel like this is the worst summer yet. it’s too warm and too humid. and i feel like it might be getting worse and worse as time passes by. but this might even not be the result of global warming, at least not fully. the earth is by technicality still in an ice age. since the polar caps did not melt yet. so what if “ages” are like seasons and we are entering a “spring age” (for the lack of better word), and what if those high temperatures are just the beginning?

but again, i feel like this is the worst summer to date. ive never heard this many ambulances, this many times, than i did this year in the period of june to july. i think its safe to assume at least half of those were heat-related... the heat is a silent killer. i don’t even think humans are meant to endure temperatures this high combined with such a high humidity. a dry heat would likely be easier to handle. but im not sure. will the heat be the end of us? is this just the beginning and the weather will be even hotter in the following years? time will tell... but also thinking back, every year for the past few years we’ve been saying “its the worst summer ever”, so maybe the patterns have been emerging for a while.
